The Flu and your child

We all have heard about the new strain of flu that is on the horizon and is being talked about so
much in the press.  It is called the H1N1 or "Swine Flu".

In studying it's effects and it's epidemiology I have advised the school to perform several functions.

First and foremost is for you to check with your pediatrician about this most important matter.  Get
his/her advice on the flu shot and if it is right for you and/or your child.  There is a lot of controversy
about whether the flu shot will be available in time and if it will be effective.  Again, check with your
doctor and pediatrician.  Also, make sure that your child is up to date with their immunizations and
that the school has a record of the shots on file.  This is very important!

Second, I have advised the school to ensure that all teachers and staff are immunized and when the
shots are available they will work on this promptly.

Third, the school is undergoing an intensive cleaning regimen which they plan to keep up throughout
the flu season and beyond.  This regimen will ensure that childrens' hands are washed regularly and
that toys that a child may put into his/her mouth are set aside for special cleaning.

Fourth, if the school suspects that a child has the flu or exhibits a temperature of 101F or more, the
parent will be called and the child will be placed in a special area away from others.  The school will
provide more details on this if it occurs.

Discoveryland has always gotten through these "outbreaks" each year with minimal problems
because the teachers and staff are so scrupulous in their cleaning.  We hope and pray that this
year's flu season will be minimal in it's effects on us.
